Understanding Your Planting Profile

Understanding your planting profile is suggested as a first step. The below questions are designed to help you to identify your site's characteristics that will assist you to determine which vegetation profile and species list best represents your site. Refer to the questions as you observe your planting site and the general landscape around you.

  1. Locating yourself
Locate yourself on the catchment map to establish which revegetation zone your site falls in.
  2. Observing Your Revegetation Site
Wander around the area you plan to revegetate, and note down the following things:
    • Where is it in the landscape?
      • Low Hill or Rise
      • Ridge
      • Rocky outcrop
      • Upper slope
      • Mid-slope
      • Lower slope
      • Depression
      • Plain
      • Swift-flowing stream or river
      • Slow-moving river or floodplain
      • Drainage line
      • Creekline
    • Steepness of slope
      • Steep (>30%)
      • Moderate (10-30%)
      • Gentle (<>
      • Flat
    • Geology
      • Alluvial
      • Sedimentary
      • Volcanic
      • Metamorphic
    • Soils
      • Clay loam
      • Sandy, granitic
      • Deep volcanic
      • Shallow, stony
      • Well-drained,fertile
      • Skeletal
      • Silts
    • Aspect e.g. exposed, sheltered / protected; northerly, southerly, etc.
    • Presence/type of exposed rocks e.g. Granite outcrop
    • What native vegetation is on your site? Do you have existing remnant trees? If you can identify any native vegetation on your site or close to your site, this will assist when selecting your species lists.
  3. Choosing your Species List
    • Click on the location map to establish which revegetation zone your site falls in.
    • Within your Revegetation Zone select a profile that best represents your site, for example Creeklines, Rivers and Floodplains.
    • Look closely at the landform descriptions, including the vegetation profile drawing, geology and EVC descriptions. Choose a landform that best represents your site. Note: Your site may be a mosaic of two or three different landforms and Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVCs) as this is quite common in nature. Mosaic or transitional areas can be planted out with a combination of species from two or three species lists.
    • Once you have selected the landform that best represents your site, select the Species List link.
    • The species list is broken into three lists; revegetation, enhancement and an EVC species list. Select your species list based on the type of planting project you are planning.
